What are Jelly Beads made of?

Jelly Beads are a Super Absorbent Polymer (SAP) which can absorb and retain water in large amounts in comparison to its original size. How well the beads absorb the water will depend on the ionic concentration of the aqueous solution that they are exposed to. For instance, when exposed to tap water, they will absorb 200 times its own weight, whereas, when exposed to de-ionized and distilled water, they will absorb up to 300 times its own weight.

SAP has a range of different uses such as in baby nappies, adult protective underwear, control of waste spillage,  water retention agents for horticulture, in underground cable to prevent water penetration and so much more. Jelly Beads offer a more vibrant and decorative use for SAP. They are completely non-toxic to use and provide countless hours of stimulation, creativity, festivity and fun!

Please note, Jelly Beads are not suitable for oral consumption and subsequently, children should be supervised at all times.

Jelly Beads Experiment

We conducted an experiment with Jelly Beads to measure the effectiveness of using them with plants. We used 6 pint milk cartons and cut their tops off and drilled holes underneath. We placed 2.5kg of commercial top soil in six cartons, two were mixed with 6g of Jelly Beads, two were mixed with 3g of Jelly Beads and two cartons did not have Jelly Beads added.

Once the cartons had been prepared, we then planted radish seeds in each of the pots. The experiment had a watering schedule over the next 35 days with plants positioned in a greenhouse with even sunlight.

Experiment Results

The radish plants were measured three times throughout the experiment at the 5 day, 14 day and 35 day intervals and the tallest plant height recorded as follows;

Summary

The final result showed how the plants without beads began to reduce in size after two weeks without being watered whilst the cartons with the Jelly Beads inside, continued to grow due to the water that had been released by the beads during times of having no water added. What the result also showed was that having too many beads mixed with soil, also had a slight detrimental effect with 3g of Jelly Beads per 2.5kg soil being the most effective mix.

So, once you have finished with showing off your flowers in their vases or once they have been played with, simply mix the beads with your plant pots and ensure your plants do not perish during a dry spell.
